Two hundred and twenty-one countryside campsites are listed on the portal, 129 of them with verified off-season opening. Forty-eight close for several months and 44 declare year-round opening that we have not confirmed. The criterion is the setting: village, farm, pond, forest or bocage, away from resorts and beaches. The regions with the most verified campsites are the Pays de la Loire (21 out of 25), Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (21), Occitanie (19) and Nouvelle-Aquitaine (17).
Off-season, peace and quiet is the main asset, and what is on offer often comes down to the rental accommodation. Terre de Loire in La Ménitré (Maine-et-Loire) announces 12 months out of 12 with arrivals possible at any time from 5pm, La Sittelle in Loué (Sarthe) receives guests in chalets and on pitches every day, and Les Vieux Chênes in Chaillac (Indre) offers optional heating in its chalets from 1 November to 31 March. In the Jura, Le Camping de l’Île in Ranchot is open all year. Some keep only their rental accommodation: La Ferme d’Hélice in Sarzay rents its gîtes all year, with an open fire, while the farm campsite is open only from mid-May to October.
In the Ain, Le Large in Villars-les-Dombes stays open all year among the ponds of the Dombes, and Kanopée Trévoux rents its accommodation all year, with pond fishing from October to March. In Ille-et-Vilaine, L’Étang in Marcillé-Robert closes only at Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and Les Rives du Lac in Châtillon-en-Vendelais open from 1 January to 31 December, by reservation outside the season. In the Oise, La Trye in Bresles opens its covered heated pool during the winter holidays, and Les Araucarias in Carlepont rent mobile homes and chalets all year, with the châteaux of Compiègne, Pierrefonds and Coucy nearby.
In Occitanie, Les Violettes in Deyme, 800 m from the Canal du Midi, are open all year, rental accommodation and pitches alike, and L’Affenage in Le Pouget welcomes pitches, chalets and gîtes 7 days a week. Les Chalets des Mousquetaires in Mirepoix (Gers) rent chalets and a wooden caravan all year, with the pool only from 15 June to 15 September.
Check the pitch dates, as many rural campsites open their grounds only from April to October. Ask whether heating is included in the rental accommodation, whether reception is staffed in winter and whether the village shops stay open.
In the countryside, the quiet season is lived at the pace of the villages. In Chaillac, the horse fair is held on the second Saturday of October, with 100 km of trails on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. In Laroquebrou (Cantal), a book fair is held in November and the market takes place on Friday mornings. In Saint-Médard-de-Guizières, October brings a musette ball, the Octobre Rose walk and a Halloween evening in the village.
Walks fill the rest of the time: the GR 341 around the Lac de Caurel (Côtes-d’Armor), the Pagoda circuit at La Selle-Guerchaise, the Mayenne towpath near Daon and the Vélo Francette. In Sarzay, the George Sand museum in La Châtre and the Saturday market round off a stay. At the Ferme de la Tournerie, in the Manche, the October holidays bring a farm visit with an afternoon snack.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
