Five seafront campsites are listed on the portal, and all have verified off-season opening, to very different degrees. The criterion is proximity to the sea, not swimming: in the low season the sea is still there, but the bar, the grocery, the entertainment and most often the pool close. People come then for beach walks, the coastal path and wind sports. None of the five has a pool whose winter opening is confirmed.
In the Manche, the camping municipal Les Mielles in Surtainville opens its pitches and rentals all year, along a 4 km sandy beach and the GR223. Off-season, the washroom block is heated and the mobile homes have convector heaters in every room; reception keeps reduced hours, late in the afternoon and on Saturday mornings. Guests are welcome by the day, week, month or year. In Tourlaville, in the Collignon district of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, the camping de Collignon sits right on the beach, known for kitesurfing and sand yachting. Only its motorhome area opens all year, without reception; the pitches run from 1 May to 30 September and the winter opening dates for the rentals are to be requested from the campsite.
In Brittany, La Corniche in Plestin-les-Grèves welcomes guests all year, facing the bay of Loquirec, with the GR 34 crossing the site and two beaches five minutes away on foot. In winter the info point is open only in the evening, and the grocery and bar stay closed from October to May. In the Aude, Le Cap Blanc in Leucate-Plage rents eleven mobile homes 50 m from the beach, all open from 1 January to 31 December, with reversible air conditioning that provides heating and a reception open from 8am to 7pm. In the Var, Les Fontanettes in La Seyne-sur-Mer opens its 23 mobile homes and 31 air-conditioned chalets all year, sells single nights outside summer and opens reception from Monday to Saturday; the sea is about 3 km away, and the campsite does not say whether its pool runs off-season.
Ask what works in winter: heating of rentals and washrooms, reception hours, shops open in the resort. Also check the real distance to the beach, and expect neither supervised swimming nor entertainment before summer.
Out of season, the seafront is explored on foot or by bike. Around Surtainville, the GR223 crosses the dunes, the Ludiver planetarium is 25 km away and the Cité de la Mer 30 km; near Cherbourg, the château des Ravalet is less than 4 km from Collignon. On the Côte de Granit Rose, the GR 34 and the Vélomaritime follow the bay, the water sports centre in Plestin-les-Grèves offers sand yachting, sea kayaking and paddleboarding, and the village market rounds off the outings.
At Leucate, nine kitesurfing and windsurfing spots attract wind-sport fans outside summer; inland, you can reach the Cathar country, Carcassonne, the Corbières and the Sigean African reserve. Around Les Fontanettes, the Ollioules gorges can be walked, and the beaches of Bandol and Les Sablettes remain accessible on foot.
Pack warm clothes and a rainy-day plan B: the summer events of the coast, such as the Fête de la Mer in Plestin-les-Grèves, take place only in season.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
