Terre de Loire is in La Ménitré, a village of 2,079 inhabitants on the north bank of the Loire, halfway between Angers and Saumur. Angers castle is less than 30 km away, La Ménitré station is 900 m from the site, and the port of Saint-Maur, from where you can see Saint-Maur abbey, is very close. The campsite is part of the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site is rated 2 stars. It has 60 pitches of 70 to 120 m² for tents, vans, caravans and motorhomes, in sun or shade, and a shared area with the Home Vélo label for hikers making just a single stop. There is no rental accommodation: the offer is based entirely on pitches. Everything is fully automated: you book online or at the terminal, check in on your own, and a telephone helpline answers from 8am to 10pm. Automatic barriers, coded gates and CCTV secure the site.
As for opening, the campsite advertises 12 months a year. Arrivals are possible at any hour, all year round, from 5pm, and the washrooms are heated in winter. The website promotes this year-round opening to cyclists and travellers passing through, motorhome owners and anyone who prefers to travel off-season.
The eco-responsible approach is emphasised, with 100% renewable electricity and careful water management.
La Loire à Vélo and waymarked paths from the campsite, visits to Angers castle and Saumur castle, calendar of local events.
The essential services are available day and night: washrooms with hot showers, a baby area, secure toilets for people with reduced mobility, a laundry room and free wifi across the whole site. In winter the washroom blocks are heated. Each marked, landscaped pitch has a 10-amp hook-up, with rates starting at €14.50 with electricity for two people and one vehicle, and €8 for the shared Home Vélo pitch, without electricity.
Cyclists have a communal area with a microwave, a fridge and USB sockets. Dogs are admitted free of charge, provided they are kept on a lead and the site rules are followed. To limit its footprint, the site has installed push taps, LED lighting with motion sensors, solar lamps along the paths, waste sorting and composting areas.
There is no food service on site, but the village is very close. It has the Vivéco convenience store, a bakery and pastry shop, a pharmacy, a beauty salon, hairdressers, a garage and a weekly market. For a meal, the guinguette La Dérive and the Embarcadère are a short walk away, the Auberge Côté Jardin and the restaurant L’Atelier are in the village centre, and food trucks park in front of the campsite on some summer evenings. There is no swimming pool or water area on site.
La Loire à Vélo runs alongside the campsite: you reach the river by the cycle path, and the nearby station offers the SNCF Train Loire à Vélo service. Waymarked paths nearby offer views of the Loire landscape, and events are organised throughout the summer at the port of Saint-Maur, where the guinguette La Dérive welcomes walkers. A Loire cruise leaves directly from this port with Loire Odyssée, and the craft brewery La Piautre offers tastings.
In the surrounding area, the campsite lists Saint-Maur abbey, Le Thoureil, Saumur castle, Angers castle, Terra Botanica and the Bioparc in Doué-la-Fontaine, as well as La Vélobuissonnière. The village itself has the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and a manor house, both listed historic monuments, and Louis XI liked to stay there in the 15th century.
Off-season, the campsite does not list any events of its own and simply relays local events in its calendar; La Loire à Vélo and visits to the castles of Angers and Saumur remain possible by car or by train.
