The municipal campsite de la Rivière is in La Selle-Guerchaise, a village in the Pays de Vitré in Ille-et-Vilaine, at 11 rue de l’Abbé François Lizé. From La Guerche-de-Bretagne, take the D805, then the D106. The site lies beside a pond in green, quiet surroundings, next to a nature area with a children’s play area, a mini-golf course and a multisports court.
It is a small village campsite: 17 pitches in all, including 2 reserved for motorhomes. The centre of the site is meant for tents, not vehicles. The town hall, which runs the site, states that it is open all year round, and the Pays de Vitré tourist office confirms this on its listing.
In practice, a traveller passing through can pitch on a free spot as soon as they arrive, with no compulsory booking; booking is only recommended from May to September. Someone comes round in the evening to collect payment, in cash or by cheque. Motorhome owners can use the facilities even if their vehicle does not fit under the barriers. The town also accepts workers away from home for a few days or even a few months: in that case, a visit to the town hall is essential, with ID, vehicle registration document, proof of insurance and proof of income.
Right next door stands the Indochinese pagoda, the emblem of the village, freely accessible all year round.
Pagoda trail (6.4 km) and Indochinese pagoda freely accessible all year round, walks around the village pond, visits to Vitré.
The facilities are modest but complete for a simple stay: toilets, showers, washbasins, laundry sinks and dishwashing sinks, as well as electric hook-ups on the pitches. Picnic tables are available, and a bread vending machine stands opposite the campsite, handy for breakfast without leaving the village. Pets are welcome.
The tourist rates in force since 1 November 2025 are displayed by the town hall: 4 € a night for a pitch (bicycle, tent or car), 8 € for a motorhome or converted van, 3.50 € per adult and 2 € per child under 14. Electricity costs 5 € a night from 1 May to 31 October and 6 € from 1 November to 30 April, which shows that the site is indeed designed to operate in winter. The tourist tax is 0.22 € per night for those over 18.
There is no restaurant, swimming pool or shop on site: the campsite relies on the pond, the village and the nearby outdoor facilities. Information is available from the town hall, on Mondays from 9am to 12.30pm and on Thursdays from 9am to 6pm, on 02 99 96 46 72. The campsite does not publish any information on whether the washrooms are heated in winter.
The main activity remains walking. The Pagoda trail, waymarked in yellow and numbered 69, is 6.4 km long from the village, with two shortcuts of 2.5 km and 4.7 km, and passes the Pâtis chapel. There stands the octagonal wooden pagoda, brought mostly from Indochina by a missionary in the late 19th century, freely accessible all year round.
Near the campsite, the village pond has a large shelter with tables, chairs and a fridge, an outdoor barbecue and play equipment for children. The neighbouring nature area adds a mini-golf course and a multisports court, while the pond is ideal for walking and picnics.
Further afield, the Pays de Vitré can round off your stay: Vitré has been a Town of Art and History since 1999 and its medieval castle can be visited, while the Château des Rochers-Sévigné, the Breton home of Madame de Sévigné, is only open between April and September. Cycle route no. 9 links Fougères, Vitré, Châteaubriant and Nantes, which will interest touring cyclists passing through.
In winter, the pagoda remains freely accessible for a walk along the trail, and guided tours of Vitré are offered throughout the year.
Open all year round, for tourists and for workers’ stays (17 pitches, including 2 for motorhomes).
