The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has 91 listed campsites, of which 46 have verified off-season opening: these are the only ones presented here as open all year or in winter. Haute-Savoie (16 campsites), Isère (12), Ain, Drôme and Rhône (10 each), Cantal and Savoie (9), Allier (8) and Loire (7) share the offer. The Alpine départements concentrate the largest number of verified campsites: 11 in Haute-Savoie, 8 in Isère, 6 in Savoie. The Ain has 8, the Rhône 5 and the Cantal 4.
The Camping caravaneige Le Giffre in Samoëns, accessible in every season with heated washrooms and rentals, gives access to the Grand Massif and its 265 km of pistes; at Verchaix, the Camping municipal Lac et Montagne serves the same ski area by free shuttle. In Chamonix, Les Deux Glaciers is open from 15 December to 1 November. Around La Plagne and Aussois, Le Bioley and La Buidonnière welcome guests all year. In the Bauges massif, the Aire naturelle du Val de Tamié rents its chalets all year at 900 m, with Lac d’Annecy 20 minutes away. Further south, the Camping municipal La Virette in Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse, open all year, offers pitches and pods a few kilometres from the Col de Porte. In the Cantal, La Prade rents its chalets all year, 20 km from Le Lioran.
Near Lyon, the Camping de Lyon in Dardilly stays open all year with heated washrooms, a heated pool from 1 May to 27 September and the Festival of Lights in December. In the Dombes, Le Large in Villars-les-Dombes opens its pitches and chalets in every season, among ponds and walking paths. In the Bresse, Le Sevron closes only from 16 October to 2 November 2026. In the hills of the Lyonnais, Au Cœur des Monts rents chalets and mobile homes 365 days a year, but its pitches are closed from December to March.
In many campsites in the region, only the rentals open in winter. Le Marintan, in the Maurienne, closes its pitches from October to April, and La Caille, near Annecy, does not reopen its campsite until May. The Loire, with 7 campsites, has none with verified off-season opening, unlike the neighbouring Rhône. In total, 14 campsites are seasonal addresses, and 31 declare an off-season opening that we have not confirmed.
First decide on the type of stay: skiing in the Alps, walks in the Chartreuse, a weekend in Lyon, fishing in the Dombes. Then ask for the exact opening dates, the heating of washrooms and accommodation, snow clearing of pitches and access to the lifts. Book early for school holidays and contact the campsite before any trip in the low season.
In winter, the region offers large ski areas: the Grand Massif from Samoëns or Verchaix, La Plagne, the Aussois area between 1,500 and 2,700 m, Megève and Chamonix, Le Lioran in the Cantal. At Aussois, winter also means a heated pool and a wellness area. Around Grenoble, Le Sappey and the Col de Porte offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, while the thermal baths of Uriage are ten minutes from L’Imprévu in Vaulnaveys-le-Bas.
Without snow, Lyon keeps its museums and the Vieux Lyon all year, with the Festival of Lights around 8 December. In the Dombes, the ponds can be explored on foot or by bike outside the summer months, and the ViaRhôna runs past several campsites in the Ain, Isère and Drôme. In the Cantal, the Caleden thermal baths in Chaudes-Aigues are 15 minutes from Sérendipité.
