Eight campsites are listed in the Allier, but only two have verified off-season opening. The others are either seasonal addresses or campsites whose winter opening is not confirmed: caution is needed before booking a winter stay.
In Châtel-de-Neuvre, on the banks of the Allier, La Courtine is open 365 days a year, every day from 7am to 10pm. It is a small, retro and eco-friendly campsite, with a pitch at 6 € a night, wifi and shower included, near the Val d’Allier nature reserve. In Saint-Germain-de-Salles, the Domaine Les Gandins, beside the Sioule, keeps its gîtes and guest rooms open all year round; the campsite, the safari tents and the chalets are closed from October to April. Its 90 m² heated outdoor pool is therefore for the warmer season.
Several campsites state year-round opening that we were unable to verify: L’Étang de Sault in Prémilhat, near Montluçon, with heated washrooms and 22 hard-standing motorhome pitches; Le Paradis in Saint-Pierre-Laval, beside a pond, where you can rent by the year; as well as the campsite at the Vieure lake, the Domaine du Bourg and La Mathonière. Call them before you travel: a motorhome, caravan or rental accommodation is not necessarily accepted in winter.
The camping municipal de La Guillermie, at the foot of the Bois Noirs, is open from 1 May to 31 October. It is therefore not suitable for a winter stay.
Have the dates, the availability of pitches or accommodation, the heating of the washrooms and the conditions for long stays confirmed in writing. Preferably book by phone. Also ask whether reception is staffed every day and what the arrival rules are outside the usual hours.
Off-season, the Montagne bourbonnaise offers hikes starting from La Guillermie, in the Bois Noirs (a fee of 2 € per person per day, tourist tax included), and cross-country skiers can reach Super-Besse from the Sioule estate. The Val d’Allier is a bird-watching site, with the nature reserve and the Romanesque church of Saint-Laurent, a listed historic monument, in Châtel-de-Neuvre. In Prémilhat, the Étang de Sault is suitable for fishing and windsurfing. Around Vieure, the 33-hectare lake holds the Blue Flag label. At Le Paradis, in Saint-Pierre-Laval, a tennis court and a table tennis area are on site, and La Mathonière offers a table d’hôte on Sundays and Wednesdays with local and organic produce. Markets, festivals and visits to châteaux and villages of the Bourbonnais round off the outings, between hedgerow countryside and spa towns such as Vichy.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
