Nine campsites are listed in the Cantal, four of them with verified off-season opening. These four offer chalets, pods, gîtes or mobile homes open all year round, but their pitches generally close for several months.
In Neussargues en Pinatelle, the camping municipal La Prade, a 3-star site beside the Alagnon at 820 m, rents chalets and “pignes” all year round; its washrooms are heated, the station is 500 m away and Le Lioran 20 km. In Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère, Sérendipité, at 1,000 m altitude, keeps its pods and its chalet Le Cerf open all year round; cabins and pitches are closed from 11 October to 2 April. Skiing and snowshoeing at Prat-de-Bouc are 20 minutes away, the Caleden thermal baths in Chaudes-Aigues 15.
In Mauriac, Le Val Saint Jean, a 4-star site beside a lake, rents its mobile homes all year round; the pitches are closed from about 3 January to 9 March. In Laroquebrou, the camping municipal Les Bains, on the banks of the Cère, keeps its chalets and gîtes open throughout the year; pitches for caravans and motorhomes open from mid-February to the end of September, tents from 1 May to 30 September.
The camping municipal Les Bruyères in Trémouille and Saint-Just in Val d’Arcomie are seasonal addresses. Le Lac in Menet, the Domaine de la Chaux de Revel in Saint-Martin-Valmeroux and the Domaine de la Vigne in Saignes have not confirmed off-season opening.
At altitude, ask whether the tracks are cleared of snow and the accommodation is heated, and specify whether you are looking for a pitch or a rental. Also check the dates of the pool, restaurant or reception, often shorter than those of the accommodation, and book early for the winter school holidays, particularly near Le Lioran, where the accommodation fills up quickly.
From La Prade, downhill skiing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are available at Le Lioran; trails start from the campsite, with an electric bike and charging points on site. Around Neuvéglise, you can combine sledding, snowshoeing and a thermal bath. Mauriac offers a walking circuit around the lake, hikes in the Monts du Cantal, concerts, exhibitions and markets. In Laroquebrou, you can visit the medieval village, its château and its 13th-century bridge, with a market on Friday mornings and a book fair in November. The chalets adapted for people with reduced mobility at La Prade and Les Bains make off-season stays easier. Around Mauriac as around Laroquebrou, the markets remain active off-season. In autumn, the deer rut can be heard near Sérendipité.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
