Le Bol d’Air is a small farm campsite in Saint-Paul-sur-Yenne, in the Avant-Pays savoyard, in Savoie. The village, which has just over 700 inhabitants, climbs the northern slope of the Mont du Chat; the site, of about one hectare, stands at 450 m above sea level, with views of the mountains. Chambéry is not far, which also makes it a convenient stopover before the Alps.
The story goes back to 1981, when Joseph Games turned a cow pasture into a campsite, alongside the family dairy farm: he then had only six pitches. His son Stéphane has taken over and wants to keep the same philosophy, that of a quiet, natural and unpretentious place. A guide describes about 25 pitches of 80 to 100 m², on grass, where everyone sets up freely without strict boundaries, among trees planted over the years.
The campsite is stated to be open from 1 January to 31 December by its own website and by several guides. It offers pitches only, with no rental accommodation: tents, caravans and motorhomes, with the option of a 4-amp electricity hook-up. Note that the washrooms are undergoing complete renovation; some facilities remain usable during the works and the new, heated facilities are due to arrive soon.
Hikes from the campsite towards the Dent du Chat, bike rides to Lac du Bourget through the Chat tunnel, a visit to Chanaz.
Comfort is deliberately simple. The current washrooms are being replaced by new, heated blocks, and a stabilised path is being created within the campsite to make getting around easier in every season. A washing machine is available to guests. Electricity is connected at 4 amps, for 4 € a night, and pets are accepted for 2.50 € a night.
As for rates, a pitch with a car is charged at 6 € a night; the shower is included in the adult and child price, and children under 2 pay nothing. Tourist tax is added at 0.22 € per person over 18. Holiday vouchers are accepted, and an outside visitor pays 3 €.
There is no pool, restaurant or organised entertainment on site: the offer suits those looking for calm, a family welcome and a rural setting. For a swim, people head to the nearby lakes, including those of Chevelu about 4 km away and Lac du Bourget 10 km away. The campsite also welcomes groups, for whom it provides a fridge and shared outdoor spaces as needed. Access is by a steeply sloping road, passable in a van.
On site, you can enjoy a table tennis table, large grassy areas for play, and the animals that live on the grounds, in particular cows. Several hiking trails start directly from the campsite, without using a busy road, which families and youth groups enjoy a lot.
The area is renowned for its hiking. The Dent du Chat is reached from the Col du Chat by a route fitted with cables on some sections, and its view extends over Lac du Bourget. Cyclists have a cycle tunnel under the mountain to reach the lake, and a waymarked route from Yenne to the ViaRhôna. The lakes of Chevelu, Le Bourget and Aiguebelette invite swimming, picnics or a stroll by the water.
A few kilometres away, Chanaz, nicknamed the Venice of Savoie, charms with its canal, its lanes and its craftspeople. In Saint-Paul, you can also spot the 13th-century fortified house of Choisel, the ruins of Lutrin castle and the 16th-century Malet manor. The campsite regularly hosts scouts, sports clubs, cycle tourists and groups on residential stays, such as the Bike Camp of a cycling federation in 2025.
Campsite open all year round, from 1 January to 31 December (pitches only).
