Seven campsites are listed in the Loire, but none currently has verified off-season opening. Three of them close for several months a year; for the other four, winter opening must be confirmed directly with the campsite. This page is therefore for spotting addresses, not for promising a stay in December.
The Astrée, in Bourg-Argental, is advertised from 20 March to 1 November, on the riverbank at 550 m altitude in the Pilat regional park, with 80 m² pitches and rates from 12 euros a night outside July and August. La Lône, in Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf, is 300 m from the ViaRhôna and close to the Espace Eaux Vives; its pool is open from May to mid-September. Au Lac Boisé, in Villerest, is a three-star site with a heated pool, 6 km from Roanne, near Lac de Villerest.
The Camping municipal La Croix de Garry covers 16 hectares beside a pond in Saint-Genest-Malifaux, at 960 m altitude, with thirteen chalets. Le Soleillant, in Verrières-en-Forez, is a farm stay at 830 m in the Monts du Forez. Les Écureuils, in Belmont-de-la-Loire, offer nine chalets, twenty-seven pitches and a leisure area. The Val du Ternay, in Saint-Julien-Molin-Molette, offers mobile homes and chalets in an oak wood, with an outdoor pool. For these four addresses, no winter opening date is confirmed.
Call before you set out: ask for the exact dates, whether the washrooms and chalets are heated, and whether the pitches remain accessible in snow, especially above 800 m. A stay in March, October or November is more realistic than one in the depths of winter. Also compare off-season rates, advertised from 12 euros a night at the Astrée, and ask whether reception is staffed outside summer hours.
The Pilat regional park and the Forez region lend themselves to stays outside summer. Lac de Villerest covers 770 hectares of water, and the area around Roanne has more than 1,100 km of mountain-bike routes and 83 hiking circuits. The Pilat park, around Bourg-Argental and Saint-Genest-Malifaux, offers trailheads at more than 500 m altitude.
The municipality of Belmont-de-la-Loire has the Sport Nature label, with mountain-bike and trail circuits. At Saint-Genest-Malifaux, a village perched at 960 m, the Pilat trails start from the campsite. Le Soleillant has a view over the Forez plain and, in clear weather, the Alps, while the Val du Ternay overlooks the Rhône valley, 20 minutes from Vienne. On the ViaRhôna near Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf, cycling remains practical in spring and autumn, and rafting or hydrospeed are available at the Espace Eaux Vives in season.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
