Seventy-eight mountain campsites are listed on the portal, 56 of them with verified off-season opening, 5 that close for several months and 17 whose off-season opening remains to be confirmed. In the mountains, low season is not a quiet period: winter is often the main season, with skiing, snowshoeing and thermal baths. The real question is what stays open in between.
Several campsites have turned towards winter. In Samoëns, the Caravaneige Le Giffre is open all year, with 265 km of slopes in the Grand Massif. In Le Grand-Bornand, L’Escale opens from 5 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, and in Aussois, La Buidonnière keeps its snow-caravan pitches open. Les Deux Glaciers, in Chamonix, opens from 15 December to 1 November. In the Pyrenees, Le Rioumajou and La Mousquère are close to Saint-Lary, and Hautacam is next to the slopes. Chalets are the most common arrangement: at Bornand, they are open all year, while the pitches end on 6 September.
In the Pyrénées-Orientales, Las Closas and Le Puigmal open in winter only at weekends and during the school holidays. Las Clotes closes from 15 October to 15 November, L’Orée des Monts in Campan closes in April and from late October to late November, and Les Myrtilles in Moustajon from 15 November to 15 December. Pitches are generally seasonal: at Catinat Fleuri in Guillestre, only the chalets and the hotel are open almost all year.
In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 22 campsites are verified: ten in Haute-Savoie, including Les Cîmes in Chamonix, six in Savoie, including Le Bioley in La Plagne, five in the Isère and one in the Ain. In Occitanie, 21 are: nine in the Pyrénées-Orientales, eight in the Hautes-Pyrénées, two in the Lozère, one in the Aude and one in the Haute-Garonne. In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, five campsites in the Hautes-Alpes, including Le Napoléon in Gap, open 365 days a year. In Grand Est, four campsites in the Vosges, including the Domaine de Longemer. In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, La Source du Doubs, Le Larmont and Val de Saine.
Check snow cover, road access and heating in the rental accommodation. Then ask for the exact calendar: autumn closure, weekends only or school holidays. The 17 campsites based on declarations alone should be contacted before booking.
In winter, the mountains are not just about the slopes. In the Pyrénées-Orientales, the hot-water baths at Dorres, Llo and Saint-Thomas stay open all year, around Las Closas and Le Puigmal. Thermal baths also dot the Alps and the Vosges: Saint-Gervais near Passy, Uriage near L’Imprévu, Luchon for Les Myrtilles, Plombières for Fraiteux.
Events punctuate the season: torchlight descent on 25 December and the Fête du cochon in Bourisp, New Year’s Eve dinner at the restaurant of Les Deux Glaciers, Luchon market on Wednesdays and Saturdays from November to March. In Gèdre, a covered natural-ice rink stays open all year. In autumn, the stag rut and mushroom picking replace the slopes, around Belcaire and the Margeride.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
