Les Frênes is a small mountain campsite on the road to the Col d’Aspin, in Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, in the Hautes-Pyrénées. It is attached to the Auberge des Pyrénées, a hotel-restaurant that also manages bookings: mobile homes are booked online through the hotel, or by phone on 05 62 91 82 46. The auberge’s website describes a quiet, family-friendly place, ideal for rest in the heart of nature, with the Pic du Midi, the Grand Tourmalet and La Mongie as the valley’s main landmarks.
The offer fits in a few lines: pitches, with an optional electric hook-up, and mobile homes for a maximum of four people, suited to a couple or a family. Two points are worth knowing before you book: the mobile homes have no water inside and use the campsite’s washrooms, a few metres away, and the site is not fully connected to the sewer system. Free Wi-Fi is mentioned, as well as a washing machine for a fee.
Opening period: the campsite’s website publishes no opening or closing dates. It is therefore impossible to say that the campsite welcomes holidaymakers in winter or, conversely, that it closes on a specific date. The mobile homes shown on the hotel’s booking page and the proximity of La Mongie suggest winter use, but nothing confirms it: before planning a stay, particularly between November and April, call the campsite to find out its dates.
The campsite remains simple. Pitches can be connected to electricity at 2, 3 or 5 amps, charged at €2.50, €3.50 and €5.50 respectively. Free Wi-Fi is advertised, a washing machine is available for €10 and an ice pack costs €2. The shared washrooms include showers, sinks, toilets and dishwashing basins, without the website specifying whether they are heated. At the Auberge des Pyrénées, the restaurant serves regional cuisine such as garbure, duck confit or trout, from €27 for the set menu and €15 for à la carte.
The campsite does not offer entertainment. It serves mainly as a base for discovering the mountains: the auberge’s website highlights the Pic du Midi, whose starry evenings are mentioned, the Grand Tourmalet and La Mongie, the nearby ski resort. It also mentions Payolle, as well as the Tour de France passing through the region.
