Camping L’Idéal is in Arras-en-Lavedan, on the road to the Val d’Azun, about 2 km from Argelès-Gazost, the spa town below. Rated 3 stars, it covers about 3 hectares of trees at around 600 m altitude, with 360-degree views of the mountains. A family took it over recently and describes it as a human-scale place with no imposed entertainment.
According to the departmental tourist office, the site offers about forty pitches for tents, vans and motorhomes, seven chalets for 2 to 6 people, including one with a private spa, six mobile homes and three wooden bivouac cabins. The campsite holds the Home Vélo label, at the foot of the Col du Soulor.
Opening period: for 2026, opening is announced from 6 April to 31 December, which means a closure from January to the end of March. Opening for the whole of 2027 is announced by the tourist office, without the dates being confirmed. The campsite’s website mentions stays “in summer as in winter”, skiing and off-season rates, but does not publish winter dates: before booking in January, February or March, contact the campsite on 05 62 45 39 70.
Reception provides information on hiking and cycling routes. The campsite has an outdoor pool with a large basin, a paddling pool for little ones and sun loungers, with views of the peaks. The bar and its terrace, along with a small shop selling local products, complete the offer, and aperitifs are organised on Sundays in summer.
Two washroom blocks offer free showers and toilets accessible to guests with reduced mobility. A nursery cubicle with a baby bath, a coin-operated laundry with washing machine and dryer, and a covered games room with wifi, table football, board games and a library are also provided. Optionally, you can rent bed linen, towels, a baby kit and a barbecue, or add a small fridge and electricity (4 or 10 amps) on pitches. For cyclists, a secure room, a washing area and a repair bench are available. The campsite’s services are described for the opening season; which of them remain available in winter is not specified.
On site there is a play area for children aged 5 to 12 with a climbing wall, slide and trampolines, a table tennis table, a volleyball net, badminton and a petanque court opposite the bar. The campsite does not schedule imposed entertainment: people meet instead at the pool, on the bar terrace or over an impromptu game of petanque.
In the surrounding area, the Val d’Azun and the Gaves valley offer hiking, trail running, road cycling, mountain biking, white-water sports and paragliding. The Pyrenees National Park is close, with vultures, chamois and marmots, and the Cirque de Gavarnie is among the outings mentioned. The Col du Soulor, on the route of the Tour de France’s great mountain passes, is nearby. In Argelès-Gazost, a market is held on Tuesday mornings and thermal baths are accessible. Arras-en-Lavedan also offers a treasure hunt through the village and an abbey church that hosts exhibitions by local artists.
Open from 6 April to 31 December 2026, closed from January to the end of March; opening all year round in 2027 announced by the tourist office, to be confirmed with the campsite.
