The municipal campsite of La Bastide is in the Pyrénées-Orientales, at the foot of the Canigó massif. The village, home to about 70 people, is the highest commune in the Aspres, at 800 metres altitude. It is an hour’s drive from Perpignan, thirty-five minutes from Céret or Amélie-les-Bains and forty-five minutes from Thuir or Prades.
The site is minimalist: pitches divided into three types, water points, barbecues, a fire pit and a washroom block. The commune’s website specifies that the campsite does not take bookings: you set up with a tent, a van or a motorhome, with no formalities announced apart from paying the displayed rates.
Opening: on its dedicated page, the commune announces a campsite open all year round, with no closure period. Outside summer, however, the offer is limited to this basic comfort at 800 metres altitude: showers are at the entrance to the village, about fifty metres away, and the laundry is in the courtyard of the old school, at the bottom of the village. It is best to call the town hall or the gîtes contact before coming in the depths of winter.
The commune also rents out municipal gîtes, a gîte d’étape (walkers’ hostel) and a multi-purpose hall, which rounds out the offer on site for groups and families.
Services are spread around the village rather than concentrated on the site. A washroom block and a fire pit are at the campsite, with water points and barbecues available. The shower is in a room at the entrance to the village, about fifty metres away, and hot water works with a token costing €1.50. A shared 7 kg washing machine, in the courtyard of the old school at the bottom of the village, is paid for with a token costing €4.
The rates displayed by the commune are modest: €4 per day for a tent, €5 for a van and €6 for a motorhome, with €1 extra per day for electricity, and a tourist tax of €0.30 per day per person.
The commune also offers municipal country gîtes: three apartments in the old presbytery, two gîtes and a gîte d’étape in the old school, as well as a multi-purpose hall. Enquiries, for the campsite as well as for the gîtes, go through a single contact, by phone or email. No swimming pool, restaurant or grocery shop is advertised at the campsite.
Here, the programme is outdoors and on the scale of a mountain village. On site, the commune provides a picnic and play area near the multi-purpose hall, as well as a pétanque court, with no organised activity advertised. The village also has a church, a wash house and a fountain, which can be seen in a few minutes on a quiet stroll through the lanes.
La Bastide’s position at the foot of the Canigó opens the way to walks and hiking in the Aspres. The commune also publishes a page of routes on its website, worth consulting before setting off to find the trails around the village.
Longer outings are made by car: Céret and Amélie-les-Bains are thirty-five minutes away, Thuir and Prades forty-five minutes, Perpignan an hour. At 800 metres altitude, conditions vary greatly with the seasons: spring and autumn are best for walking, while in winter you should check road conditions and the weather before travelling.
Open all year round, no booking (basic pitches, tents, vans and motorhomes).
