The Val de Saine municipal campsite sits in the centre of Foncine-le-Haut, a village in the Haut-Jura within the regional nature park of the same name, on the bank of the little river Saine. The village’s shops and services are a few steps away. From Geneva, the airport is about 80 km away; the Chaux-des-Crotenay TER station is 12 km away, the Frasne TGV station 30 km and the Poligny exit of the A39 48 km.
The site is rated 3 stars and has 49 level, shaded pitches. A separate rate applies to walkers and cyclists without electricity, as the campsite lies close to the routes of the Échappée jurassienne and the Grande Traversée du Jura. The showers and toilets were renovated in 2024, and the commune also offers, on its accommodation page, chalets for 6 to 9 people.
On opening, the rule is clear: pitches can be booked from 1 May to 30 September. Outside this period, it is motorhome users who make use of the site, as the service area, with waste disposal, water and electricity, operates all year round. Electricity there costs €5 for 12 hours from October to April. The campsite therefore offers no tent pitches or rentals in winter: winter welcome relies on this area, useful for fans of Nordic skiing or snowshoeing.
The village is also a small family ski resort, with a drag lift and cross-country ski trails, making it a base for winter as well as summer.
From December to March depending on snow cover: downhill skiing at the village drag lift, Nordic skiing on four areas, snowshoeing; state of the slopes and webcam on the commune's website.
The campsite’s facilities are simple and well kept. The showers and toilets, completely renovated in 2024, are complemented by a washing machine, a dryer and a freezer. Wifi is included in the pitch rate and the campsite has a common room.
A small grocery corner offers cold drinks and ice creams. For everything else, the village shops are right nearby, as are the municipal services. No food is served on site; the hotels and restaurants of Foncine-le-Haut are listed on the commune’s website.
The motorhome service area is the off-season highlight: waste water disposal, chemical toilet cassette emptying, fresh water and electricity are available there all year round for €4. From October to April, access to electricity costs €5 for 12 hours; while the campsite is open, from May to September, a motorhome pitch with water and electricity costs €20 a night. A storage space can be hired for €1 a night outside the opening period. The campsite advertises neither a swimming pool nor a water area; water is enjoyed in the Saine, a first-category river popular with anglers.
On site, campers have a tennis court, a table tennis table, a sports field and a children’s play area. In the surrounding area, the commune is associated with many waymarked walking trails of varying levels and a 40-post botanical trail devoted to the plants of the mountain commons, such as gentian, thyme and wild thyme.
Several mountain bike routes are available, from the 1.6 km leisure circuit to the 6.3 km Tartre loop. Fishing takes place mainly on the Saine, a first-category river where fly fishing is a local speciality. The Haute Vallée de la Saine, listed in the Green Guide for its remarkable sites, brings together summits, lakes, waterfalls and peat bogs.
In winter, the village becomes a family ski resort: the drag lift suits beginners learning and improving, Nordic skiing is available on four areas linked to those of Chapelle-des-Bois, Chaux-Neuve and Pré Poncet (including a “Chez Valentin” area in the Mont Noir forest, with a refreshment bar and light meals), and snowshoes let you explore the snowy landscapes. The commune publishes the state of the slopes and a webcam on its website.
