Camping de la Source du Doubs is on rue de la Source du Doubs, in Mouthe, in the Haut-Doubs, within the Haut-Jura regional nature park. It sits away from the village, about a hundred metres from the source of the river, which springs up at 942 m altitude. Hiking and mountain biking trails start from the site, and the alpine ski, cross-country and snowshoe slopes are opposite.
The site offers three options: 14 shaded pitches for tents, designed for hikers on foot or by bike, 20 hardstanding pitches for motorhomes and caravans, with water and electricity, and 10 chalets for 4 to 6 people, including one accessible to guests with reduced mobility (4 places).
The chalets are listed as available all year round, for skiing in winter as well as hiking and mountain biking in the warmer months. The campsite itself stays open in autumn, but the team is then not permanently at reception: you need to phone if necessary. The washrooms are heated in winter, and the electricity rate on the pitches distinguishes the period from 1 October to 31 March from that of April to September. The website publishes no closing date.
Chalets are mostly rented by the week, Saturday to Saturday; shorter stays can be requested by phone. Food is available at the Grand Chalet, 200 m away, and the neighbouring village has all the shops, including a supermarket.
Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, biathlon, sledging and skijoring at the Source du Doubs resort, opposite the campsite.
The washroom block, heated in winter, includes hot-water showers and basins. Wifi is free across the whole site. There is also a freezer for free use, picnic tables, secure access and a large free car park outside the campsite. The laundry, with a washing machine and a dryer, was unavailable at the time of consultation, pending replacement of the machines.
The motorhome and caravan pitches are hardstanding, marked out by a small hedge and a tree, with an adjoining green space, an electrical hook-up and drinking water. Electricity costs €3 a night from 1 April to 30 September and €5 from 1 October to 31 March. The campsite’s service area is only accessible from May to October; the rest of the year, the village one is used. A barbecue can be hired for €5 per stay.
Each chalet has a large room with an equipped kitchen (induction hob, fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher), a table for six, a living area with a sofa bed and television, a double bedroom, a bunk-bed room, a bathroom with shower, a separate toilet and a furnished terrace. A closed garage for skis and bikes and a parking space are provided. A check-in and check-out inspection is carried out, with a €300 deposit and optional cleaning. There is no swimming pool on site.
On site, children have a play area, and a floodlit petanque court allows play in the evening. The rest of the offering is nearby, around the source of the Doubs, where a picnic area, games and an interpretive trail invite a stroll.
In summer, the Val de Mouthe has more than 200 km of waymarked trails through mountain pastures, peat bogs, lakes and forests, and 260 km of mountain bike routes spread over some twenty circuits. The Grande Traversée du Jura trail passes through. You can go horse riding from the Les Bâties mountain farm in Mouthe or from the Les Cerclevaux riding centre in Chaux-Neuve, and fish for trout in the Doubs, Lake Saint-Point or Lac des Mortes.
In winter, the Source du Doubs resort offers alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, biathlon, sledging, horse rides in the snow and skijoring, in an area presented as that of the coldest village in France. The website stresses that the motorhome pitches face the slopes. The surrounding peat bogs, home to the capercaillie and the lynx, can be visited in any season, and the Val de Mouthe tourist office details the routes.
Chalets open all year round; campsite also open in autumn and winter, with no closing date published by the website.
