Fifty-seven riverside campsites are listed on the portal, of which 37 have verified off-season opening, 13 close for several months and 7 have off-season opening still to be confirmed. The river shapes the landscape here: fishing, towpaths, cycle routes. It does not determine opening. In most verified cases, chalets and rental accommodation stay open all year, while pitches, pool and restaurant close from October to April.
Outside the swimming season, the river is for walking and cycling. The Vélo Francette passes the camping municipal du Bac in Ménil and the camping des Rivières in Daon, on the Mayenne. Terre de Loire, in La Ménitré, is open 12 months a year on the Loire à Vélo. Sous le Moulin, in the Ain, is open all year round near the ViaRhôna, and Kanopée Village de Trévoux offers fishing in the Dombes ponds from October to March. On the Doubs, Le Camping de l’Île in Ranchot is close to the EuroVelo 6.
Several riverside campsites serve as a winter base. The camping municipal La Rivière in Porté-Puymorens, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is open in summer and winter alike, with downhill and cross-country skiing on site. Le Rioumajou, in Bourisp, is 2 km from Saint-Lary. Le Haut des Bluches, in La Bresse, is closed from 8 November to 17 December 2026, then open with skiing, an ice rink and a free bus. The chalets at Altier in the Lozère are rented all year. In the Cantal, La Prade is 20 km from Le Lioran.
In Pays de la Loire, seven campsites are verified, including La Sittelle in Loué and the Val de Braye. In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, eight are, including the municipal campsite Le Sevron, closed from 16 October to 2 November 2026. In Burgundy-Franche-Comté, there are six: Les Herlequins, Les Promenades in Quingey, Saône Valley, Les 2 Rives, l’Île and Val de Saine. In Occitanie, six, including L’Espazo in Durban-Corbières and Le Roquelongue in Boisse-Penchot. In Centre-Val de Loire, Le Jardin de Sully, Les Chambons and Le Rochat Belle-Isle open all year. In Île-de-France, L’Île du Roi in Triel-sur-Seine welcomes tourists and business travellers, with coworking on weekdays. La Rivière in Exideuil-sur-Vienne and Mon Village in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Rives Nature in Brittany and U Ponte Grossu in Corsica complete the list.
Ask whether it is the chalets, the motorhome area or the pitches that open, and what the closing dates are, if any. The 7 campsites that state their own opening should be contacted before any winter stay.
The riverbanks can be explored by bike all year round: Vélo Francette around Château-Gontier, Loire à Vélo from La Ménitré, ViaRhôna near Meximieux and Pérouges, the V86 cycle route in front of Le Roquelongue with the GR65 500 m away. Fishing depends on the season, for example on the Ain, which is classed as a first-category river.
Markets and events set the rhythm of autumn: Beaujolais nouveau in November and the Fête des Lumières in Lyon in December for Kanopée, the seasonal market in Quingey on 16 October 2026, the book fair in Laroquebrou in November, the Thursday market in Château-Gontier. For heritage, the châteaux of Angers and Saumur, the one at Sully-sur-Loire and the Gallo-Roman baths of Chassenon are worth a detour. In the Pyrenees, the hot-water baths of Dorres follow skiing at Porté-Puymorens.
