Fifty-one 4-star campsites are listed on the portal, 27 of them with verified off-season opening. Fourteen close for several months and ten state year-round opening that we have not confirmed. The 4-star rating describes the level of facilities, not the calendar: in the low season, leisure services, pool, restaurant and entertainment, very often close, whatever the number of stars. What stays open at the verified campsites is first of all the accommodation and the heated washrooms.
Bois des Roches in Bouchet (Drôme) stays open all year, but its pool opens only from 15 April to the end of September and its restaurant from 15 May to the end of September. Le Pressoir in Petit-Palais-et-Cornemps (Gironde) opens rentals and pitches all year, with a water park from 15 June to 15 September. In Sérignan, Mas des Lavandes reopens its restaurant and grocery at All Saints’ Day. At Les Fontanettes in La Seyne-sur-Mer, reception is staffed from Monday to Saturday off-season. A few campsites keep a relaxation area open: Domaine de Longemer in Xonrupt-Longemer (Vosges) with its wellness area and heated indoor pool, Les Chalets du Lac in Belcaire (Aude) with sauna and covered pool all year, and Domaine Ecôtelia in Le Nizan (Gironde) with a wellness area open 7 days a week.
In the mountains, Le Rioumajou in Bourisp is 2 km from Saint-Lary, and Azun Nature rents chalets and cabins all year for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with its 23 pitches open from 1 May. On the coast, Au Petit Port de l’Houmeau (Charente-Maritime) opens all year, Huttopia Arcachon keeps chalets and wooden caravans, and Le Vallon des Cigales in Istres publishes winter rates. Near the cities, Camping de Lyon in Dardilly heats pitches, rentals and washrooms, and Bordeaux Lac is 15 minutes from the centre of Bordeaux. In Corsica, Domaine de Riva Bella (Haute-Corse) keeps accommodation and trails open, with restaurant and thalassotherapy from Friday to Monday off-season.
Ask for the dates of the pool, the restaurant and reception, not only those of the campsite. Some sites open only their rentals all year: Camping des Lacs in Celles-sur-Plaine rents its gîtes all year but closes its pitches for part of the year. Les Charmes in Apremont state year-round opening with no published closing dates: confirm before booking.
A 4-star site open in the low season serves as a base for outings. In Belcaire, skiing is at Camurac, less than 10 minutes away, with snowshoeing and sledding at the Col du Chioula. At Le Rioumajou, four ski resorts are nearby, including Saint-Lary, and its thermal baths can be visited. In Xonrupt-Longemer, you can ski at Xonrupt-Le Poli or go snowshoeing.
In the city and on the coast: the Festival of Lights in Lyon around 8 December from Dardilly, Arcachon’s Ville d’Hiver on foot from Huttopia, the medieval city of Saint-Émilion 17 km from Le Pressoir, La Rochelle 20 minutes from L’Houmeau. In Sorgues, wine cellars, Provence markets and cycling routes are accessible all year. At Mas des Lavandes, a kids’ club and a programme of entertainment run during the Easter and All Saints’ holidays, and the beaches of Valras-Plage are a 15-minute walk away.
