Forty-three lakeside or pondside campsites are listed on the portal, of which 22 have verified off-season opening, 9 close for several months and 12 have off-season opening still to be confirmed. The criterion is water in the immediate vicinity. It guarantees neither swimming nor an open campsite: in almost every case the swimming season ends in September, and pitches often close before the rental accommodation.
When swimming stops, the lake remains a setting for walking, fishing and birdwatching. Around the Camping du Lac in Caurel, the GR 341 circles the lake along 40 waymarked kilometres. At the Plage du Midi, in Montsauche-les-Settons, a 15 km path runs along the Lac des Settons. At the camping municipal L’Étang in Marcillé-Robert, the 100-hectare pond is home to a bird reserve. At the Domaine de Trémelin, in Iffendic, the lakeside bar opens from October to March.
In Brittany, the Camping du Lac, L’Étang, Trémelin and Les Rives du Lac in Châtillon-en-Vendelais are verified, the last open from 1 January to 31 December, by reservation in the off-season. In Pays de la Loire, five campsites are: Les Ouches du Jaunay and Les Rulières in the Vendée, the Domaine du Houssay and the municipal campsite La Chesnaie in the Sarthe, and the Village vacances et pêche in Villiers-Charlemagne. In Occitanie, Les Chalets du Lac in Belcaire, Lac Saint Georges, the municipal lakeside campsite at Boulogne-sur-Gesse and Le Lomagnol keep at least their rentals open. In Burgundy-Franche-Comté, the Plage du Midi, Les Voiles de Laives and the Camping du Marais open, the latter with its wooden caravans only in winter. In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the Caravaneige Le Giffre in Samoëns, the Village Mont-Blanc L’Écureuil in Passy, La Grange du Pin and La Raza, in the Ain, are among the verified addresses. Bordeaux Lac, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, and La Tour du Stock, in the Moselle, complete the list.
Check what really opens: at La Raza, the pitches close from 16 October to 14 April, while the accommodation is rented by the month. Also ask whether the bar, restaurant and pools are running, then confirm the dates before booking. The twelve campsites that state their own opening should be contacted before any winter stay.
Out of season, the lake is explored on foot. The GR 341 around Lac de Caurel, the three-lakes circuit at Laives, the Régalante greenway and the GR 37 from Les Rives du Lac, the Morvan trails around the Settons: each shore has its own route. Fishing stays open all year at several campsites, at the Domaine du Houssay for example, except for pike from late January to late April.
The lake is also a starting point for excursions. Bordeaux is 15 minutes from Bordeaux Lac, with the Cité du vin. From Les Rulières, the Marais poitevin and the abbeys of Maillezais can be visited in the low season. At Samoëns and Passy, skiing takes over, and at Belcaire, Camurac is less than 10 minutes away. The Sarthe has the Marigné-Laillé Christmas market on 12 December 2026.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
