Thirty-seven campsites in the seaside category are listed on the portal, 19 of them with verified off-season opening, 10 that close for several months and 8 whose off-season opening remains to be confirmed. The criterion is geographical: a campsite on the coast, on the Channel, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean or in Corsica. It says nothing about opening, and the sea changes a great deal in low season.
From autumn, water areas, restaurants and kids’ clubs close almost everywhere. The Domaine des Pins in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez keeps its rental accommodation and its motorhome area open all year, but its water area closes from November to Easter. By contrast, the covered pool at Les Cercelles in Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron opens during the winter school holidays. What remains is the coastline itself: the GR 34 from La Corniche in Plestin-les-Grèves, shore fishing from L’Houmeau, kitesurfing and windsurfing around Cap Blanc in Leucate, sand yachting at Collignon.
In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, four campsites are verified: Au Petit Port de l’Houmeau, Les Cercelles, Huttopia Arcachon, open all year with chalets and wooden caravans, and Le Dauphin, of which only the motorhome area stays open in winter. In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Marina Plage in Vitrolles, Les Fontanettes in La Seyne-sur-Mer and Au Jardin de la Ferme in Six-Fours-les-Plages are open all year, while La Brise de Camargue closes from 14 November to 17 December, then from 4 January to about 5 February. In Occitanie, Cap Blanc, the Domaine de Sainte Véziane in Bessan and the Mas des Lavandes in Sérignan are open all year. In the Pays de la Loire, La Grisse and Villa Campista complete the Domaine des Pins. In Normandy, the municipal campsite Les Mielles is open all year with heated washrooms, while Collignon and La Ferme du Bord de Mer keep only their areas or their hardstanding pitches. In Brittany, La Corniche welcomes guests all year, and in Corsica, the Domaine de Riva Bella keeps its accommodation open.
Ask whether it is the area, the rental accommodation or the whole campsite that is open, then the reception hours and the heating in the accommodation. The campsites in the Somme, including L’Éden, La Cavée Verte and Le Bois Dormant, close for several months: they are seasonal addresses.
Off-season, the coast is best discovered on foot or by bike. On the Channel, the GR223 runs alongside Les Mielles and La Ferme du Bord de Mer, with the Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg close to Collignon. In Brittany, the GR 34 and the Vélomaritime start from La Corniche. On the Île d’Oléron, the museum, the La Cotinière fish market and the Cité de l’huître in Marennes can be visited all year.
Further south, La Rochelle and its aquarium are 20 minutes from L’Houmeau, Arcachon can be explored on foot in the Ville d’Hiver, and the garrigue of Cap Sicié blooms in spring around Six-Fours. Around Leucate, the Cathar country, Carcassonne and the Sigean African reserve fill a day. In the Camargue, flamingo watching suits the shoulder seasons. In Corsica, the hiking trails and the llama park at Riva Bella stay open all year.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
