Twenty-six campsites offering unusual accommodation (cabins, wooden caravans, yurts, safari tents, huts) are listed on the portal, 18 of them with verified off-season opening. Occitanie has 5, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Nouvelle-Aquitaine 4 each. Unusual does not mean open in winter: a cabin without running water or a seasonal safari tent cannot be rented out like a chalet.
The Cabanes de Fontfroide, in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye, run on solar lighting, without running water; electric heating costs €10 per night. The yurts for 5 and 9 people at L’Aigrette in Attichy, heated by a heat pump, are in use all year, and the cottages at Rives Nature in Sixt-sur-Aff have electric heating. At Les Deux Bois, in Baratier, the TAOS and the cabins are heated and air-conditioned. At Camping du Marais, in Riel-les-Eaux, each wooden caravan has its own shower room, but the site does not say whether the communal washrooms are heated.
Domaine Ecôtelia, in Le Nizan, has no bare pitches: its unusual accommodation is open all year, with a wellness area open 7 days a week, a 38 °C jacuzzi in the wine-barrel lodges and a Nordic bath in the Canadian trapper’s cabin. Off-season, the place is aimed mainly at couples and friends on a weekend break. The wooden caravans at Le Marais stay open, with the two-bedroom Champenoise at €79 a winter night against €92 in summer. At La Trye, in Bresles, safari tents are rented with a private spa and a winter raclette package, for €40 for two. At Camping des Îles, in Chanaz, the Transylvania chalets and the Iris mobile home are rented in every season.
In Chanaz, eco-lodges and safari tents are limited to spring and summer. At Rives Nature, the cabin is rented from May to September, at La Tour du Stock the huts from 1 April to 31 October, and at Le Bois de Cornage the atypical accommodation from 1 April to 31 October. La Chevrerie des Felges, Foxycamp, Val de Rhodes, Le Hameau des Grilles and Saint-Pierre-de-Rousieux are seasonal, while three other campsites state an opening that we have not confirmed.
Check the heating, the running water, the private or shared washrooms and the exact dates for each type of accommodation.
An unusual off-season stay is planned around walks and local visits. In Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye, the medieval village can be visited from the cabins, with hiking, mountain biking, a mini-farm and electric bikes. Near Ecôtelia, you can walk in the forest on a hiking trail.
In Brittany, Rives Nature is close to La Gacilly and the Maison Yves Rocher, whose immersive museum is open all year. In the Côte-d’Or, Camping du Marais serves as a base for the Vix vase museum in Châtillon-sur-Seine and Renoir’s studio in Essoyes. In Chanaz, the village hosts events all year and skiing is about 30 minutes away. In the Oise, L’Aigrette is close to the Compiègne forest and the Château de Pierrefonds, and an intercommunal covered swimming pool is 4 km away.
At Les Deux Bois, Les Orres are 20 minutes away, and the Embrun market takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
