Lozère has nine listed campsites, only three of them with verified off-season opening: Altier, Del Ron in Ispagnac and Les Chalets de la Margeride in Blavignac. In this mountain department, winter opening mostly means chalets; tent and caravan pitches close almost everywhere in autumn.
The Camping municipal de l’Altier stands at 700 m altitude, at the foot of Mont Lozère. Its four chalets are rented all year, weekends included, with winter rates published from October to April; its pitches, however, only open from 15 June to 15 September. The same pattern applies at Del Ron, a 3-star campsite on the banks of the Tarn: seven chalets stay open all year, while the mobile homes only welcome guests from early May to mid-September. In the north of the department, Les Chalets de la Margeride is not a campsite but a village of 21 3-star chalets, open all year for stays of two days to a month. Its pool is covered, with a paddling pool, and the heating method should be asked about when booking.
Five campsites close for several months and should be booked for spring, summer and early autumn: La Rode and Rondin des Bois in Rocles, near Lac de Naussac (heated pool and restaurant), La Palhère in Pourcharesses, inside the Cévennes National Park, with its heated riverside pool and play area (closed from mid-October to mid-April), Tivoli in Mende and La Chèvrerie des Felges in Cassagnas, from 15 April to 15 October. At Lac de Ganivet, in Lachamp-Ribennes, chalet rates run from 28 March to 19 December 2026, but winter opening is not confirmed: you need to ask the campsite.
Always ask which accommodation stays open: chalet, mobile home or pitch. Check the heating, road access in snow and the distance to shops, often several kilometres. Winter stays should be booked in advance, by phone with some operators.
Around Altier, winter brings cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledging on Mont Lozère; in autumn, you can listen to the stags bellowing. In Villefort, 10 km away, the lake can be walked around. In the Margeride, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available near Blavignac, and the European bison reserve can be visited by sleigh in winter; in autumn, the mushroom season draws walkers.
In the Gorges du Tarn, Del Ron gives access to the GR 736 trail less than a kilometre away, and Sainte-Enimie, a village classed among the most beautiful in France, is a few kilometres off. Mende, the department’s prefecture, offers its cathedral and old town in every season, as do the spa towns of Bagnols-les-Bains and La Chaldette, close to Lac de Ganivet.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
