Caravaneige: the guide to caravan camping near the ski slopes

Key takeaways

  • A caravaneige is a campsite that takes caravans and motorhomes during the ski season, close to a resort. The term is not an official label.
  • Of the 511 campsites we have verified, 57 confirmed open off-season are in the mountains, and 49 of them mention skiing, a resort or nearby slopes.
  • Only 15 of these 57 mountain campsites confirm heated toilet blocks: that is the first thing to ask about.
  • On equipment: propane (not butane) below freezing, enough electricity for heating, winter tyres or chains from 1 November to 31 March in French mountain zones.
  • Without a caravan, heated chalets and mobile homes are available at several verified campsites at the foot of the mountains.

A caravaneige is a campsite that stays open in winter to welcome caravans and motorhomes close to the ski slopes, with electricity, heated toilet blocks and, ideally, a shuttle to the resort. The word is not an official label: some campsites put it in their name, others offer the same thing without using it. What matters is what the campsite actually does from December to March, and that is what we have verified.

Caravaneige: definition and how it works

The principle is simple: you arrive with your own accommodation (caravan, motorhome, converted van) and park it on a cleared pitch with an electric hookup, a few minutes from a ski area. The campsite provides water, waste disposal, electricity and, depending on the site, heated toilet blocks, a ski room or a drying room.

The season is short and depends on snowfall. Some sites open all year, others only from early December to the end of March, and others only at weekends and during school holidays. Before booking, always compare the announced dates with the ski lift calendar, and keep in mind that we only report what campsites publish: dates need to be confirmed by phone. For an overview of winter camping, our guide Winter camping, the practical guide covers the basics.

Equipping your caravan or motorhome for the cold

Heating, insulation and water

On-board heating runs on gas, sometimes with an electric element as a backup. Two practical rules: check your gas supply more often than in summer, because consumption climbs quickly in severe cold, and protect the water circuits from frost (drain them or keep them warm, depending on your manufacturer’s manual). A thermal cover on the gas bottle and insulating screens for a motorhome windscreen also limit heat loss. If your motorhome spends the winter in the mountains, we detail the settings in Motorhome in winter: laying up or travelling.

Propane or butane?

This is the question that catches out the most beginners. Butane boils at -0.5 °C: below that temperature it no longer vaporises properly, and the flame weakens while you still have a full bottle. Propane boils at -42.1 °C and stays usable in severe cold. In the mountains, you therefore choose propane, provided that the regulator and appliances in your vehicle are compatible: check this in the manual before you leave.

Snow on the roof, tyres and chains

Clear the roof after a snowfall: accumulated snow adds weight to the vehicle and slides off in one block at the first thaw. As for the road (French rule): in mountain zones marked by signs, vehicles with four or more wheels, motorhomes included, must be fitted with four winter tyres or carry snow chains or snow socks for at least two driven wheels. The period runs from 1 November to 31 March (source: service-public.gouv.fr, page on winter 2025-2026, to be rechecked for the current season). Also check the forecasts and snow cover by mountain range on Météo-France montagne.

Choosing your caravaneige: the criteria that matter

  • Distance to the slopes and the shuttle: a campsite 3 km from a resort or served by a free shuttle changes the day, especially with children.
  • Electricity: the amperage varies a lot from one campsite to another. On our pages, you will find hookups of 13 amps, of 10 amps (without a socket on every pitch) or of 2 and 6 amps depending on the rate chosen. With 2 or 6 amps, forget the electric heater.
  • Heated toilet blocks: of the 57 verified mountain campsites, only 15 confirm them. For the others, the information is not published: ask.
  • Ski room and drying room: valuable so you do not sleep among wet boots.
  • Snow clearing of the pitches: ask whether the site is cleared and whether the lanes are passable with a caravan.
  • Services: waste disposal point, frost-free water tap, laundry, sometimes a heated pool or wellness area to recover.

Our selection: the verified mountain campsites

Of the 511 campsites we have verified, 221 have confirmed off-season opening, including 57 in the mountains. Among them, 49 mention skiing, a resort or nearby slopes in their description. Here is the breakdown by mountain range, with the resorts these campsites mention.

All the campsites below are verified open off-season. Distances are those the campsite publishes, to be confirmed before booking. If you want to browse the whole list, the mountain campsites page groups them all.

Northern Alps

  • Camping Caravaneige Le Giffre, in Samoëns: open all year with summer and winter rates, heated toilet blocks and a waste disposal point for caravans and motorhomes. The Grand Massif Express leaves from Samoëns for a linked ski area of more than 265 km of slopes, and more than 40 km of cross-country trails run along the Giffre.
  • Camping municipal La Buidonnière, in Aussois: caravaneige pitches open all year, heated toilet blocks in winter, downhill skiing from December to April on a ski area from 1,500 to 2,700 m, heated pool in winter.
  • L’Escale, in Le Grand-Bornand: winter from 5 December 2026 to 31 March 2027, gondolas 500 m away, free shuttle, heated toilet blocks with rooms for storing skis and drying clothes, gas bottle delivery to your pitch.
  • Camping municipal Lac et Montagne, in Verchaix: open all year, free shuttles to the Grand Massif and to the cross-country skiing of the Haut-Giffre.
  • Les Deux Glaciers, in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc: open from 15 December to 1 November, two heated toilet blocks, slopes 3 km away, free trains in the valley with the guest card.

The Pyrenees

  • Las Clotes, in Égat: the Font-Romeu resort is 3 km away and caravaneige is accepted; in winter, the campsite opens only at weekends and during school holidays.
  • Le Rioumajou, in Bourisp: open all year, heated toilet blocks, four resorts nearby including Saint-Lary 2 km away. The hookup posts deliver 10 amps and do not serve every pitch: bring an extension lead.
  • Hautacam, in Préchac: pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes open all year, hot water all year, the Hautacam resort just below.

The Vosges and Jura

  • Le Haut des Bluches, in La Bresse: closed from 8 November to 17 December 2026, otherwise pitches open in winter with 13-amp hookups, heated toilet blocks, a lockable ski room and a free winter bus to La Bresse-Hohneck.
  • Domaine de Longemer, in Xonrupt-Longemer: pitches and a motorhome area open all year, three heated toilet blocks, skiing at Xonrupt-Le Poli, heated indoor pool.
  • Camping de La Source du Doubs, in Mouthe: heated toilet blocks in winter, stabilised pitches with electric hookup, the Source du Doubs ski area opposite the campsite.

An alternative without a caravan: heated chalets and mobile homes

No caravan? Several verified campsites rent heated accommodation in winter, with skiing within reach. In Passy, Village Mont-Blanc l’Ecureuil rents heated chalets and a tiny house all year, with skiing 15 km away. In La Plagne Tarentaise, Le Bioley includes chalet heating from 3 January to 18 April, right next to the La Plagne ski area. In Chamonix, Les Cîmes offers chalets by the week with winter rates from 1 December to 31 March, and skiing about 4 km away.

What to check by phone before booking

  1. The exact opening dates of the pitches (not only of the rentals).
  2. The amperage available on your pitch and the cost of electricity in winter.
  3. The toilet blocks: heated, open, accessible in winter without crossing a snowy path.
  4. Snow clearing of the lanes and pitches, and access for a caravan.
  5. The shuttle, or the distance and road conditions to the lifts.
  6. Whether you can fill up with water and empty waste when temperatures drop.

If you do not find your mountain range here, the Haute-Savoie and Hautes-Pyrénées pages list the campsites open off-season by département; the other ranges appear in the table above. frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about caravaneige

What is a caravaneige?
A caravaneige is a campsite open in winter, close to a ski resort, that takes caravans and motorhomes on cleared pitches with electricity. It is not an official label: some campsites carry the word in their name, others offer the same service without using it. Always check the dates, the amperage and the heated toilet blocks.
How do you heat a caravan in winter?
Most caravans are heated with gas, sometimes with an electric element as a backup. Watch your gas supply, protect the water circuits from frost and check the amperage of your pitch: at 2 or 6 amps, an electric heater is out of the question. Your manufacturer’s manual remains the reference for the settings.
Which campsite should you choose at the foot of the slopes?
In our selection, Le Haut des Bluches in La Bresse, L’Escale in Le Grand-Bornand, La Buidonnière in Aussois and Camping Caravaneige Le Giffre in Samoëns confirm heated toilet blocks and nearby skiing. Las Clotes is 3 km from Font-Romeu. Compare the dates, as some campsites open in winter only at weekends and during school holidays.
Propane or butane in winter?
Propane. Butane boils at -0.5 °C and no longer vaporises properly below that temperature, whereas propane boils at -42.1 °C. For a stay in the mountains, use propane, after checking in the manual that the regulator and appliances in your vehicle are compatible.
Do you need winter tyres or chains to go to a caravaneige?
In mountain zones marked by signs (French rule), from 1 November to 31 March, vehicles with four or more wheels, motorhomes included, must have four winter tyres or snow chains or snow socks for two driven wheels. This rule is detailed on service-public.gouv.fr, to be rechecked for the current season.
Can you do caravaneige with a converted van?
Yes, if the campsite accepts vans and motorhomes in winter and your vehicle is equipped for the cold: heating, frost-protected water, suitable gas. Some verified campsites, such as Le Haut des Bluches (waste and filling points) or Domaine de Longemer (motorhome area), advertise pitches open in winter.
