Ten campsites are listed in the Var, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, only three of them with verified off-season opening. Four others are seasonal campsites, closed for several months, and three have no confirmed information: caution is needed before planning a winter stay.
In La Seyne-sur-Mer, between Toulon and Bandol, Les Fontanettes offers 54 air-conditioned rentals, chalets and mobile homes, open all year, with single nights possible outside the summer period; reception is open Monday to Saturday off-season, every day from early July to late August, and the sandy beaches are about 3 km away. In Six-Fours-les-Plages, Au Jardin de la Ferme, a farm campsite in an olive grove, opens camping and gîtes all year, with pitches at a reduced rate from January to April and from October to December; its washroom block is not heated. In Saint-Zacharie, La Gantesse, three stars, keeps its mobile homes open all year, but its pitches are closed in winter; the 33-hectare wooded estate is home to free-roaming llamas.
Aux Tonneaux (Méounes-lès-Montrieux) is open from April to September, Belle de Mai (Hyères) from 1 April to 1 October, Le Petit Réal (Solliès-Pont) from 1 April to 30 September and Lou Troumpetoun (Montmeyan), near the Verdon gorges, from 1 May to 31 October, on the EuroVelo 8 cycle route. These are spring, summer and autumn addresses, not winter ones.
Les Canebières (Le Muy), Le Castillon (Le Castellet) and the GCU campsite in Cavalaire-sur-Mer have no confirmed opening dates: contact them before booking.
Ask which type of accommodation stays open, what the reception hours are off-season, and whether the rentals are air-conditioned or heated. Also compare winter rates, sometimes reduced by 20% for pitches.
The Var is well worth visiting off-season. Around La Seyne-sur-Mer, the Ollioules gorges can be explored on foot, the marinas make for pleasant strolls, and Bandol has three easily accessible beaches, including Renécros, with a thalassotherapy centre. From Six-Fours-les-Plages, the coastal path leads to Notre-Dame du Mai on Cap Sicié, which offers a 360° view over the Îles d’Or, Toulon and the Cassis coast; the flowering of the garrigue brightens spring.
Inland, La Gantesse is the starting point for several sections of the GR9, passable until November, and the calanques of Cassis and the Sillans waterfall are about 30 minutes away. Le Castellet is known for the Paul Ricard circuit. Around Solliès-Pont, markets are held almost every day of the week in the neighbouring villages, on Wednesdays in Solliès-Pont itself.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
