Six campsites are listed in Mayenne, three of them with verified off-season opening. Two of these keep their chalets available in winter but close their pitches, which matters before you book. The département suits quiet stays by the water, along the river and the Vélo Francette.
In Daon, Camping des Rivières, three stars, rents ten heated chalets twelve months a year; the site is fully fenced and the heated pool is open from May to mid-September. Tents are not accepted there from October to March. In Ménil, Camping municipal du Bac keeps its chalets and gîte available all year, while tents and caravans are welcome from 10 April to 30 September, from €11 a night at 2026 rates. The gîte occupies the former lock-keeper’s house, and the hand-pulled ferry is the last one in Mayenne. Both stopovers hold the Home Vélo label.
In Villiers-Charlemagne, Village Vacances et Pêche, three stars, announces opening with no closure for its chalets, studios, tents and pitches. Twelve chalets, six of them right on the water, border a 7-hectare pond; no winter activities are announced. Every pitch has its own private washroom facilities, and a service area welcomes motorhomes.
Three campsites have no verified off-season opening. La Cascade, in Ernée, a farm campsite reserved for motorhomes, motorcyclists and hikers, says it is accessible at all times, with no published dates. La Chesnaie, in Saint-Denis-du-Maine, and Le Parc, in Château-Gontier, need to be confirmed with the campsite or the town hall.
Distinguish between rental accommodation, which can be used in winter, and the bare pitch, which is often closed from October to April. Ask whether the accommodation is heated and what minimum length of stay applies.
The towpath can be explored on foot or by bike from Daon and Ménil, on the Vélo Francette, and you can cast a line in the river. From Ménil, the Thursday market in Château-Gontier and the museums in Laval and Cossé-le-Vivien offer indoor outings when the weather turns; Angers is an hour away. The southern Mayenne events calendar lists what is on nearby.
In Saint-Denis-du-Maine, a 3 km path links La Chesnaie to Meslay-du-Maine, and an 11-hectare lake offers fishing jetties. In Ernée, you stay among the farm animals, both domestic and exotic. In Villiers-Charlemagne, the pond lies next to the Vélofrancette, on which the campsite is a stopover; six chalets look directly onto the water, and a service area welcomes passing motorhomes.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
