Nine campsites are listed in the Sarthe, six of them with verified off-season opening. Three others remain to be confirmed: the Camping intercommunal du Val de Braye in Lavaré, La Goupillière in Auvers-le-Hamon and Le Ballon Rond in Dollon, reported as temporarily closed.
In Loué, La Sittelle, three stars, welcomes guests every day, in chalets and on its pitches, beside the Vègre; its ten chalets are heated, from €60 in low season. In Mézières-sous-Lavardin, Smile et Braudières, a four-star site with 44 pitches, keeps camping and rental accommodation open from 1 January to 31 December, with heated washrooms. In Bessé-sur-Braye, the Resort et Camping Val de Braye, four stars, welcomes guests without a break, according to its official website, between Le Mans and Tours.
Several municipal campsites close their pitches but rent out their chalets in winter. In Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, Camping Le Sans Souci rents chalets and a wooden caravan in winter as in summer, while the pitches and lodges close from November to March. The village of Fresnay was voted the French public’s second favourite village in 2021, and the sauna and hot tub can be booked for private use. In Spay, the Domaine du Houssay offers five chalets to rent in winter, with pitches open only from 15 April to 30 September. The campsite holds the Camping Qualité and Qualidog labels, and the 40-hectare leisure area is freely accessible. In Marigné-Laillé, Camping municipal La Chesnaie keeps its gîte, chalets and motorhome area accessible in winter, with the area’s washrooms closed from October to April.
Check what is open in winter: pitch, chalet, gîte or simply a service area. Ask about heating in the accommodation and access to the washrooms. For the three addresses to be confirmed, call the town hall or the campsite before travelling.
The Alpes Mancelles can be explored in winter as in summer: hiking and canicross from Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, the Mézières forest and the Vieux-Lavardin castle from Smile et Braudières. In Loué, the market is held on Tuesday mornings and a 16 km trail follows the Vègre. River fishing remains possible, and the neighbouring water park opens only from May to September.
Near Marigné-Laillé, the Bercé forest and the L’Aune ponds, where you can fish for trout, are about ten minutes away, and the village Christmas market takes place on 12 December 2026. In Spay, the leisure area offers fishing, trails, orienteering and a skate park in winter, along with disc golf and mini-golf on site. From Bessé-sur-Braye, you can reach the indoor pools of the nearby aquatic leisure centre, the Château de Courtanvaux and the Cité Plantagenêt in Le Mans.
Every open all year round campsite is checked against its official listing and real photos, not a marketing pitch.
We cross-check public Google ratings and reviews. An establishment below family standards doesn't make the selection.
