Camping & Gîtes En Campagne is in Saint-Christophe, in the north-east of the Charente, about 14 km from Confolens and 37 km from Limoges. The commune has barely 334 inhabitants, spread across a rolling plateau of meadows and woods, at the foot of the western foothills of the Massif Central. This is the Charente limousine, a livestock-farming area with no mass tourism, where this human-scale estate is tucked away.
The site is modest in size: 29 very spacious, well-defined pitches and seven gîtes. The atmosphere is meant to be relaxed and family-friendly, with guests looking for peace and quiet and families with young children. A large pool and a children’s pool, a restaurant with a terrace and a food truck fitted out in a 1959 Peugeot D4 complete the picture.
As for opening, the campsite says it operates all year round, with no fixed arrival days: you arrive after 1pm and leave before 12pm. High season 2026 runs from 11 July to 23 August, with the rest of the year counted as low season, with negotiable discounts for groups or long stays. The exact operating dates of the gîtes, the catering and the swimming pool outside summer are not published: they should be confirmed directly with the campsite before booking.
The neighbouring village has a church with 12th-century Romanesque features and the tower of a feudal castle, and the quiet roads of the plateau are well suited to walks and bike rides.
Walks and bike rides on the quiet roads of the plateau, farmers' markets and a visit to the village of Saint-Christophe (Romanesque church, feudal tower).
On site, catering comes in two forms. The restaurant has a large terrace, and the food truck, called “Le Nez de Cochon”, serves snacks, simple meals and ice creams, to enjoy outside or to take away to your pitch or gîte. You are asked to let them know in advance if you want to eat as soon as you arrive. Twice a week, a table d’hôtes is also organised.
Every morning, a bread service delivers baguettes, croissants and pains au chocolat on orders placed the day before. A full breakfast is also available at the restaurant, for €8 per person. The nearest supermarket takes a bit of a drive; on Thursday evenings, a wood-fired pizza van sets up in the village, 2.4 km away.
The estate has two pools in an enclosure fitted with a child safety fence: an octagonal pool of 36 m² and 1.40 m deep, and a pool for little ones of 8 m² and 70 cm deep. The water is heated by solar panels and its quality is checked daily. Swimming is under the supervision of parents.
Wifi is free in the lounge corner, at the restaurant, on part of the site and in several gîtes. A washing machine is available for €5 per wash, a fridge can be hired for €4 per day, and caravan owners can store their caravans in a covered shelter for €40 per month. Dogs are welcome; let them know in advance for the gîtes.
The campsite is aimed first and foremost at young children and at adults looking for peace and quiet. The youngest have a play area with swings, a slide, a trampoline and a sandpit, along with toys and children’s bikes freely available. They can also catch lizards, collect wood to toast marshmallows around the evening fire, or splash about in the small pool.
Around the estate, the lanes are little used: the website praises walks and bike rides where you hardly meet anyone. The Charente limousine offers authentic villages and farmers’ markets with local produce, without the crowds of heavily touristy areas. The area relies on Limousin cattle farming and on deep valleys of schist and granite, and is home to the Lacs de Haute-Charente and the Confolens festival, 14 km away.
In the village of Saint-Christophe, the church with 12th-century Romanesque features and the tower of a former feudal castle can be visited in a few minutes. The campsite also hosts a four-day cycling tour, the Fietsvierdaagse, for which a participation fee of €18 per person is asked. The campsite’s own programme of entertainment is not detailed on the website: it is best to ask at reception what is on offer depending on the time of year.
Open all year round, with no fixed arrival days; high season from 11 July to 23 August 2026. Exact dates of services outside summer to be confirmed with the campsite.
