Lille Christmas Market 2026: dates, giant wheel and tips

Key takeaways

Lille's Christmas market runs from mid-November to the end of December 2026, from 18 November to 30 December according to early announcements. Around 90 chalets set up on Place Rihour, and a giant wheel of about 50 metres rises over the Grand’Place. Combine it with the Vieux-Lille, the Vieille Bourse and the Palais des Beaux-Arts.

Every winter, Lille gets into the Christmas spirit. Around a hundred chalets set up on Place Rihour, a giant wheel rises over the Grand’Place and the Flemish façades of the Vieux-Lille light up. The Lille Christmas market is one of the busiest in northern France and also draws many visitors from Belgium and Britain.

Here is what you need to know to make the most of it: 2026 dates, what you will find there, our ideas for complementing your visit and the campsites open in winter where you can stay on the edge of the city.

The chalets on Place Rihour

The heart of the market beats on Place Rihour, at the foot of the former palace of the dukes of Burgundy, which today houses the tourist office. Around 90 wooden chalets offer Christmas decorations, crafts, toys, jewellery and local produce. You will also meet exhibitors from other countries, which gives the market a European flavour.

Between purchases, warm up with mulled wine or hot chocolate and try the specialities of the North: filled waffles, carbonnade, potjevleesch or cheeses such as Maroilles.

The giant wheel on the Grand’Place

Just steps away, the Grand’Place hosts a giant wheel around 50 metres high every year. From the gondolas, the view over the belfry of the Chamber of Commerce, the Vieille Bourse and the city rooftops is superb, especially at dusk. The square’s illuminated Christmas tree completes the scene.

What to do in Lille during the Christmas market

  • stroll around the courtyard of the Vieille Bourse, a jewel of Flemish Renaissance architecture, where booksellers and chess players gather;
  • get lost in the cobbled lanes of the Vieux-Lille, among brick façades and decorated shop windows;
  • visit the Palais des Beaux-Arts, one of the largest museums in France;
  • climb the belfry of the town hall, a UNESCO-listed site, for a 360-degree view;
  • enjoy a waffle in a historic cake shop on rue Esquermoise.

Our visiting tips

  • Come on a weekday and during the day: Friday and Saturday evenings get very crowded;
  • Leave the car behind: the Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe stations are a few minutes’ walk away, and the metro serves the centre;
  • Opening hours are shorter on 24 December, and the market is closed on the 25th: check with the tourist office;
  • For a Christmas weekend, combine Lille with the Christmas markets of Arras, Bruges or Brussels, all reachable by train.

Where to stay at a campsite open in winter near Lille?

During the market, hotels in the centre fill up fast. A campsite open all year lets you stay on the edge of the city at a low price. Our selection includes several campsites open all year in the Nord department. The Caravaning du Grand Sart, in Sainghin-en-Mélantois, is the closest, about fifteen kilometres from Lille, with heated sanitary facilities all year round. For a more natural stay, La Sensée, in Aubigny-au-Bac, rents out its chalets and mobile homes all year, with a covered, heated aquatic area, less than an hour from Lille.

Our view

The Lille Christmas market impresses with its Flemish atmosphere, its giant wheel and its historic centre, which is best explored on foot. It is more compact than the large Alsace markets, but ideal for a weekend, especially as it combines easily with the Belgian markets. Come on a weekday, visit the museums during the day and stay on the edge of the city to keep your budget under control.
